World Suicide Prevention Day – September 10

World Suicide Prevention Day – September 10

What is World Suicide Prevention Day?
Each year on September 10, communities across the globe mark World Suicide Prevention Day. It is a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and remind each other that reaching out can save lives. For young people especially, life can feel overwhelming at times—with school, friendships, family, and the pressure of growing up. These challenges can sometimes lead to feelings of hopelessness or thoughts of suicide. It’s important to know that no one has to face this alone.

Talking About It Matters
If you or someone you know is struggling, the first step is talking about it. Having an honest conversation with a trusted adult—such as a parent, teacher, school counsellor, or psychologist—can make a huge difference. Friends also play an important role. You don’t need to have all the answers, but simply listening without judgment shows that you care.

How to Support Someone
Here are some simple ways you can support someone who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts:

  • Notice changes: If a friend seems withdrawn, talks about feeling hopeless, or says life isn’t worth living, take it seriously.
  • Ask directly: It’s okay to ask, “Are you thinking about suicide?” This does not put the idea in someone’s head—it shows you care.
  • Listen and stay calm: Be a safe person for them to share their feelings with. Avoid dismissing or minimising their struggles.
  • Encourage support: Suggest talking to a trusted adult or professional. Offer to go with them if they feel nervous.
  • Don’t keep it a secret: If you are worried about a friend or if someone’s life may be at risk, reach out to an adult immediately.

Where to Get Help
For further information or if you or someone you know needs immediate support, there are services available 24/7:

  • Lifeline: 13 11 14 – for anyone in crisis or feeling suicidal.
  • Kids Helpline: 1800 55 1800 – free, private and confidential counselling service for young people aged 5–25.

Together We Can Make a Difference
World Suicide Prevention Day reminds us that every conversation matters. Together, by showing kindness, listening, and encouraging help-seeking, we can support those who are struggling and help create a safer, more connected school community.
