At Allegra, we believe that learning extends well beyond the classroom. Last term, a group of our students proudly represented the school at the Connect & Thrive Coffs Coast youth leadership event, joining more than 110 young people from across the region for a day focused on connection, leadership and creating stronger communities. The event brought together schools, community organisations and local leaders to empower young people to have a genuine voice in shaping the future of the Coffs Coast.
Building Leadership Through Real-World Opportunities
Throughout the day, students participated in a range of interactive workshops and discussions designed to strengthen leadership, communication and confidence.
Highlights included:
- A youth-led Think Tank exploring what a thriving community looks like for young people.
- An interactive leadership workshop facilitated by Sonder Youth.
- A panel discussion with local community leaders.
- Youth-led presentations showcasing positive initiatives already happening across the region.
- Information about local opportunities to continue making a difference in the community.
These authentic learning experiences gave students the opportunity to collaborate with peers from other schools, share their ideas, and see firsthand how their voices can contribute to meaningful community change.
Student Voice Making a Difference
One of the most valuable aspects of Connect & Thrive was the opportunity for students to contribute directly to conversations about the future of their community.
Students explored important topics including:
- Creating kinder, more connected communities.
- Improving access to youth spaces and activities.
- Better public transport.
- Increased employment, education and sporting opportunities.
- Greater youth involvement in local decision-making.
- Shared responsibility between schools, families, community organisations and government to support young people.
These conversations align closely with Allegra’s commitment to empowering students to become confident, capable and engaged members of their communities.
A Credit to Allegra
Perhaps the proudest moment came after the event, when organisers contacted the school to commend our students.
They described Allegra students as “an absolute standout” among attendees, praising their respectful behaviour, maturity, thoughtful participation and genuine engagement throughout the day. Organisers noted that our students consistently contributed positively to discussions, asked insightful questions, treated presenters and peers with respect, and embraced every opportunity the event provided.
Feedback like this reflects the culture our students help create every day—a culture built on acceptance, connection, collaboration and a willingness to learn from others.
