As we reach the midpoint of the Illuminate Community Challenge, there’s a strong sense of excitement, collaboration, and creative energy flowing through Allegra School. This immersive, week-long program, delivered in partnership with Illuminate Education Australia, has given students the chance to step beyond their usual classroom routines and explore innovative, real-world problem-solving.
Through a series of workshops, mentoring sessions, and hands-on challenges, our students are developing critical skills in teamwork, communication, entrepreneurship, and design thinking. It’s been incredible to watch them grow more confident and capable each day, embracing the program’s call to “believe in tomorrow today.”
Empowering Students to Shine
Reflecting on the week so far, Emily Markwell, who has overseen the program at Allegra, shared how inspiring it has been to see students engage in new ways:
“The Illuminate program has been such a great opportunity to take students out of their day-to-day school routine and really see them shine in new ways. Some of the ideas they’re coming up with are incredible – they’re passionate, innovative, and so invested in what they’re creating. It’s been an awesome experience so far.”
The program is designed to encourage exactly this kind of engagement, giving students the structure to develop their ideas while offering the flexibility to explore what matters most to them and their community.

Inspiring Depth and Reflection
Jessi Mostogl, our Illuminate Education facilitator, described what’s been most inspiring to witness:
“Probably the most inspiring thing about what students are doing through this process is seeing the diversity and depth of their ideas. They’re thinking deeply about what they and their community need, and reflecting on their process in such a meaningful way. Watching how they collaborate, share tasks, and think critically has been fantastic.”
At its core, the Illuminate Challenge is about social entrepreneurship, encouraging students to design innovative solutions that have a positive impact. The ideas emerging this week demonstrate that young people are not only capable of tackling complex issues but are deeply thoughtful about the change they want to see.
Students Leading the Way
For our students, the experience has been equally enriching. Archie, a Year 10 student, reflected on what he’s valued most:
“I love that we get to be put in groups with new people we haven’t interacted with before. It’s such a great opportunity to get out of your comfort zone, learn new things, and work together for a good cause.”
And Indira, in Year 9, echoed this sense of connection and growth:
“It’s really great to be able to work with new people, share ideas, and see how creative everyone can be. It’s been such a positive and inspiring week.”
These reflections capture the heart of the Illuminate experienceL:collaboration, creativity, and courage to think differently.

Looking Ahead
We’re now counting down to our Awards Presentation at 1:00pm this Friday, where students will pitch their final social enterprise ideas and showcase their prototypes at the Demonstration Hall. Families and community members are warmly invited to attend and celebrate the achievements of our young innovators.
It’s been an inspiring journey so far, and we can’t wait to see the ideas come to life in the final presentations. The Illuminate Challenge continues to prove what’s possible when students are given the chance to take the lead.
