Promoting Better Mental Health for All: Allegra’s Celebration of Mental Health Awareness Month

This October, Allegra joined communities across Australia in recognising Mental Health Awareness Month, embracing the national theme championed by the Black Dog Institute: “Promoting Better Mental Health for All.”

Across two weeks, the Allegra community came together to focus on wellbeing, connection, and mindfulness through a series of activities, workshops, and creative sessions led by Danielle Free and supported by the Action Ambassadors. The program encouraged students to explore what mental health means to them and how small, everyday actions can make a big difference.

A Community of Connection

From gratitude postcards and affirmation stones to mindfulness colouring and yoga, every activity was designed to create space for calm, reflection, and kindness. The “Walk and Talk” sessions offered students an opportunity to connect with peers in a relaxed setting, reinforcing the importance of talking openly about mental health and reaching out for support.

Creative workshops such as jewellery making, sensory aid creation, and freestyle art allowed students to express their feelings visually, nurturing both creativity and emotional awareness. These sessions reflected Allegra’s commitment to supported, personalised learning – meeting students where they are and helping them grow in confidence and empathy.

Empowering Student Voice and Leadership

The Action Ambassadors took a leading role throughout the fortnight, helping to set up, run, and facilitate events. Their involvement exemplified Allegra’s belief in student agency and the power of young people to lead positive change within their community.

One of the highlights was the Student Voice Café, where students discussed strategies to promote wellbeing and inclusion at school. This open dialogue reinforced Allegra’s mission to create a culture where every student feels heard, valued, and supported.

A Shared Commitment to Wellbeing

The Black Dog Institute’s campaign reminds us that good mental health isn’t just about avoiding distress, it’s about fostering environments where people can thrive. At Allegra, this ethos is deeply embedded in everything we do. The Mental Health Awareness Month program reflected our school’s values of acceptance, connection, and collaboration, and our vision to be at the forefront of inclusive, individualised education.

At the conclusion of the program, Danielle is acknowledged for her leadership, organisation, and creativity in delivering a program that was both impactful and joyful. Staff and students alike shared positive feedback, noting that the activities helped strengthen the sense of community and belonging that defines Allegra.

Looking Forward

As we reflect on Mental Health Awareness Month, Allegra continues its commitment to supporting mental health year-round. Through collaboration with organisations like headspace and initiatives inspired by the Black Dog Institute, we remain focused on empowering students to understand, express, and care for their mental wellbeing, and for one another.
