At the end of July, Allegra students will embark on one of the most exciting experiences of the school year, our Sydney Excursion.
Over three days, students will travel by overnight train, experience world class attractions including The Lion King, Taronga Zoo and the Sydney Aquarium, explore Circular Quay and Darling Harbour, and spend time building memories with their peers beyond the classroom. More importantly, they will have the opportunity to develop independence, resilience, confidence and social connections in authentic, real world settings.
While the excursion itself is still a few weeks away, preparation starts now.
For many of our students, this may be the first time they have travelled away from home without their parents or carers. For others, it may be their first experience spending several days navigating the pace, crowds and sensory demands of a major city. Moving from the familiarity of regional New South Wales to the busy environment of metropolitan Sydney can be exciting, but it can also be challenging.
One of the key wellbeing goals of the excursion is to help students build independence and resilience by stepping outside their comfort zones while remaining supported by familiar Allegra staff. The experience has been carefully designed to provide opportunities for students to challenge themselves, develop communication skills, strengthen friendships and create positive school memories.
As parents and carers, there are several ways you can begin supporting your young person now.

Talk About Routines and Expectations
During the excursion, students will be following schedules, travelling on public transport, attending activities, managing their belongings and participating as part of a group. Practising independence at home can make a significant difference.
Simple activities such as packing a bag, managing personal belongings, following a morning routine, organising medications, or taking responsibility for daily tasks can help students feel more confident and prepared when they are away from home.
Discuss Regulation Strategies
The Sydney excursion will involve trains, ferries, busy streets, shopping centres, crowds and unfamiliar environments. Some students may find these experiences energising, while others may find them overwhelming at times.
Families can begin conversations about what helps their child feel calm, safe and regulated. For some students, this might be listening to music, taking a short break, using sensory supports, talking with a trusted adult, going for a walk, reading, drawing, or spending a few minutes in a quieter space. These are all strategies that many students have already identified as helpful for them.
Helping your child recognise the early signs of stress or dysregulation and discussing what they can do when those feelings arise can build confidence before the excursion begins.
Encourage Help Seeking
One of the most important messages we share with students is that they do not need to manage challenges alone.
Throughout the excursion, Allegra staff will provide regular check ins, regulation opportunities, clear communication and flexible support based on individual needs. Students will be encouraged to communicate when they need help and to use the strategies that work for them.
Parents can reinforce this message at home by encouraging their young person to speak up when they need support and reminding them that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Embrace the Opportunity
Growth rarely happens when we stay completely comfortable.
Some students may feel nervous about travelling away from home. Others may be excited about the adventure ahead. Most will likely experience a combination of both.
That is exactly why experiences like this are so valuable.
The Sydney excursion provides opportunities for students to experience success in new situations, develop confidence in their own abilities, strengthen relationships with peers and staff, and discover just how capable they are.
We are incredibly excited to share this experience with our students and cannot wait to see them embrace new challenges, create lasting memories and return home with stories to tell.
The adventure starts now, and we look forward to taking the journey together.
