The Importance of Work Experience for Student Wellbeing

Work Experience: More Than Just a Job

Last week, our students completed their work experience placements, and they are now reflecting on the journey. For many, it wasn’t just about turning up on time and learning the ropes, it was about discovering what they’re good at, building confidence, and taking real steps toward the future. Over the course of the week, they grew grit, strengthened perseverance, made connections, and found a sense of purpose that supports both learning and wellbeing.

A Pathway Beyond the Classroom

At Allegra, we know that learning and wellbeing work best when they go hand in hand. For some students, a traditional classroom might not be where they shine. Their time in the community opened doors to learning in a different way through doing, creating, connecting with others, and developing the tenacity to keep going when things get challenging.

Building Confidence and Connection

By the end of the week, students showed just how far they had come in a short time. They demonstrated grit by tackling new tasks, adjusting to different routines, and sticking with challenges. They strengthened communication skills through talking with supervisors, colleagues, and even customers. And they experienced genuine connection by becoming part of a team and contributing to something bigger than themselves.

Finding Direction and Purpose

Work experience gave our students a clearer sense of their strengths and sparked ideas for what could come next. They began to see what kind of work excites them, and what environments help them thrive. This hands-on success built perseverance and showed them they were capable of more than they might have thought just a week ago.

Lessons Learned Along the Way

Both students and parents are learning valuable lessons from the work experience journey. Students discovered how they respond under pressure, what motivates them, and how they can adapt to different situations. Parents saw their young people rise to the challenge, and recognised how their own support, encouragement, patience, and guidance has helped make that possible. These same strategies can make a difference in other areas of life too. The routines, accountability, and problem-solving skills being built right now can support improved school attendance, better follow-through with assessment tasks, and stronger bonds between parent and child as they work toward shared goals.

Growing Resilience and Independence

Over the week, students showed greater resilience by navigating new environments, taking feedback on board, and bouncing back from small mistakes. This tenacity will serve them well beyond work experience in school, relationships, and future employment.

A Key Part of Our Wellbeing Approach

At Allegra, work experience is more than a program, it’s a powerful part of how we support the whole student. Our young people completed their placements with valuable experiences, new confidence, and the skills to take bold, confident steps toward their future. Most importantly, they finished the week feeling seen, supported, and ready for whatever comes next.
